I believe that all human beings need to have sufficient funds in order to pay 100% of the REAL and ACTUAL costs in today’s dollars of the following items:
1. Shelter (rent/mortgage) – Very modest accommodations
2. Food (Food Stamps and/or cash from earned income) – reasonably nutritious food
3. HVAC and Electricity (sometimes this is included in the rent)
4. High speed internet and telephone service. I personally pay $36/month for each service for a total of $70/month.
5. Transportation – In New York City that would be an $81/monthly MetroCard
6. Toiletries – You really don’t want to be around me if I haven’t shaved or showered in a few days (stinky poo!!!!)
7. Laundry Soap and sufficient quantities of quarters for the laundry machines. After a while soiled clothing gets really smelly!
8. Medical Care, including physical, psychological and psychiatric care as needed
This can be done through Medicaid, Medicare or ????
One More Item
I forgot to add the following:
8. Clothing that is appropriate for work. The clothes need to fit the person properly. They can be gotten from “thrift shops” or non-profit corporations that specialize in giving work clothes to people (Career Gear, Dress for Success, etc)
