Is American marketing itself wisely to the world?

Issue(s): Economy

Why does America have an image problem in parts of the world?

Corporate Personhood

Problem description

Corporate personhood was enshrined into law by the US Supreme Court decision which essentially says that corporations have the same rights as naturally occuring human beings. The difference is that all human beings eventually get old and eventually die. Corporations have the potential to last forever; although it must be noted that many do eventually die or are swallowed up by still bigger corporations. There are some corporations, however, such as the American Red Cross that live on for over 100 years and still exist today.

A List of Problems

Here is a list of problems that I think need to be looked at as an integrated whole. That's why I've put this as a Forum topic. I've also put each of these in Activist Solutions as a separate problem.

1. Stress – Generally
2. Boredom – Particularly among youth
3. Poverty
4. Energy Consumption and Destruction of Farmland through Development
5. Workforce Dissatisfaction, Overwork and Stress in the Workplace
6. Workplace and Corporate Culture
7. Anger In the Workplace – Both Overt and Covert

Our Hands Are Tied by Conflicting Interests

Public/private programs such as conservation easements, purchase of development rights, and transferable development rights are severely limited by “private property rights.” Government agencies such as the EPA and educational efforts of such groups as the Sierra Club are equally powerless to stop the continual paving of farmland.

One American consumes as much energy as 531 Ethiopians

Forum topic related to:

Stephen Leeb, an expert on the intricate relationship between energy and financial markets, predicts another bout of double-digit inflation before the end of the decade because of spiraling energy costs. I found this information in 2004.

Creating millions of jobs and a new economy by allowing hemp cultivation

In 1938 Popular Mechanics Magazine published an article called Billion Dollar Crop, celebrating the promises of the hemp industry and the advances in technology used to process its amazing fibers. Unfortunately petrochemical and pharmaceutical cartels had just partnered with the Department of Treasury in tricking our Congress into passing the prohibitive Marihuana Tax Act. Suddenly the future changed from green to toxic and synthetic with the introduction of nylon to replace hemp canvas and a slew of sketchy pharmaceuticals to replace the highly versatile and powerful cannabis medicine.

Mesmerized by Melodic Rhetoric: Guns vs. Hope

"I've been through Y2K and I've been through 9/11. I have never seen people so afraid as what we are seeing right now," said gun shop owner Scott Moss recently. With more guns per capita easily 250 million privately owned ones and certainly more people in prisons than any other democracy, the intriguing question in this still worsening economic calamity is: If Americans found the courage for political rebellion now, would it preempt massive criminal violence, social havoc and armed rebellion later?

The industrial world is suffering through a major recession

From Wikipedia:

Fighting Greed

By now most Americans have experienced extreme disgust upon hearing about the nearly $20 billion in bonuses given to people in New York City’s financial sector at the end of 2008. After sending the nation into the current economic black hole there is no way of comprehending the audacity of financial company executives in giving themselves and their colleagues shameful rewards for abysmal and disgraceful performance. Other than screaming and moaning about all this dishonorable behavior what should the Obama administration and Congress do?

Eat Your Cats and Dogs

Nations come and go, rise and fall as elites and the wealthy make victims of most citizens and plutocracies prevail. Current dogma is that we live in the greatest nation on Earth. Perhaps in terms of ideals there is some truth to that. But with another trillion dollars that we now must borrow at higher costs because of the meltdown of the financial sector, solidifying our position as the greatest debtor nation, Americans have little to be proud of. Our government and politicians as well as the corporate state have failed us.
