Profile

Miguel Palacios is a Ph.D. Candidate in Business Administration—finance—from the Haas School at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on understanding the impact that human capital, the most valuable asset in any economy, has on asset prices and the financial decisions individuals make. His interest in this area stems from the work he has done on innovative instruments for financing education. On this subject he published Investing in Human Capital (Cambridge University Press, 2004) and co-founded Lumni Inc. Investing in Human Capital, which has been endorsed as “…the authoritative work on the revolution that is under way to integrate human capital into our financial system”, builds the case for using innovative financial instruments based on students’ future earnings to finance education. Lumni is a practical implementation of the ideas presented in his book, currently financing students in Chile, Colombia and the United States.

Miguel holds an M.A. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley, an M.B.A. from the Darden Business School, University of Virginia, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Universidad de los Andes, Colombia. He is an amateur tricks water skier, currently ranked #3 in the west coast by the American Water Ski Association, and an instrument rated pilot.
